Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6 am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG).

He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) filled it with GAS (from Saudi Arabia) and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB.

At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his computer (Made In Malaysia, with tech support in INDIA), Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in AMERICA.....

 

The fight goes on...and on...

On Tuesday, May 29, 2007, a ceremony was held for the ground-breaking for the new Wal-Mart Supercenter.  

On Wednesday, May 30, 2007, papers were filed with the Washington County Circuit Court and with the State of Wisconsin, appealing the Hartford Zoning Board of Appeals decision to not require a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for the inclusion of a tire change and lube service, as is required for any other similar type of service. Update, August 27, 2007: Wal-Mart was denied an appeal of its motion to deny a hearing of an appeal by the HCRG for a hearing on the timliness of filing of an appeal. Yes, it sounds confusing, but it really is what is. I guess that's why lawyers are needed to sort it out. Read more about it here.

On June 25, 2008, the Court of Appeals of Wisconsin, District II, denied the request by HCRG to overturn the denial of the appeal on the timeliness of the proper submission of the paperwork to do so.

Yes, believe it or not, it took the court system from May 30, of 2007, to June 25, 2008 (almost 13 months), to deny the HCRG the opportunity to even present its case contesting that the papers were filed 3 minutes late. And this was not until the court was informed in April of 2008 that the case wasn't even in the schedule. Hmmmm....

We, The Hartford Citziens for Responsible Government, are disappointed that we won't have our day in court.

We think it was important for the court to hear our legal arguments against the city's decision to fail to require a Conditional Use Permit for the oil and lube section of the Hartford WalMart.

We will continue to hold the city responsible for the residential and commerical growth is has allowed and the effect is has had and will continue to have on schools, city services, traffic, the environment, the locally owned businesses, and the character of Hartford.

Who We Are...

The Hartford Citizens for Responsible Government was established in April of 2006 in the city of Hartford, Wisconsin. We adhere to and support the principles upon which our government was founded:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. -- That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, -- That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

We, as a political action group, support the following:

* To keep our members and the public informed of local, county, state and national government and political issues.
* To uphold the Constitution of the United States of America, along with the Constitution of the State of Wisconsin, "for a Government of the people, for the people".
* To listen and consider all opinions regarding government and political issues and to help keep the public infordmed of these issues.
* To be involved and open in regards to these issues.
* To take what ever legal actions may be necessary to accomplish our purpose.
* To hold all elected officials accountable to their constituents


Thanks to requests by HCRG since their inception in April, 2006:

  • All Hartford Common Council meetings are now available on DVD at the Hartford City Library.
  • The mayor and some of the city alderpersons have now made their e-mail addresses available to the public for communications by their constituents.
  • The mayor's bio*** is now on the city website, soon to be followed by photos and bios for the Common Council members.

    *** HCRG has been informed that Mayor Henke's bio has been on the "City Officials" page since 2003, and was placed there at his request.
